What is GAN?

Gananoque Arts Network (GAN) is a not-for-profit corporation operating in the town of Gananoque, Ontario. GAN’s single focus is transforming our community and lives through the power of creative expression.

The GAN constitution requires that all GAN activities be based on the following guidelines;

a) Activities shall foster community engagement, strengthen skills and build awareness in various areas of creative expression.

b) Opportunities for artist development & public education will be included as part of an annual calendar of events.

c) GAN will strive to transform our community by supporting, encouraging and promoting public engagement through creative expression.

d) Transformation of our community will occur as we develop, and nurture relationships, collaborations and partnerships.

e) GAN is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. We will neither discriminate nor tolerate discrimination.

In the spring of 2022, GAN found its bricks and mortar home on the main street of Gananoque’s downtown core, where a community hub for creativity and connection is being promoted and endorsed for all who visit.

We view our physical space as a ‘Third Place’ where everyone is welcome, social classes and backgrounds are level, and individuals are considered social equals. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place).

Since moving into its physical home, GAN has enriched our community through transformative art events, inclusive gatherings, and a variety of educational and creative experiences. GAN’s hub includes a privately run cafe which provides a casual atmosphere and inviting vibe.

The open space promotes drop-in opportunities, such as engaging with the working artists that hold studio spaces, fingering a tune on the piano and guitar that are available for spontaneous play, or creating masterpieces at the children's table, which features creative supplies to occupy little minds and hands.

GAN headquarters is also home to several working artist studios providing opportunities for artists to engage with the community and advance their arts practice.

The Noel Bullock Gallery, a permanent fixture within the GAN space, provides an interesting series of art exhibitions throughout the year. A fulsome pottery program within a well appointed studio space was added in 2023.

GAN operations are managed by a volunteer board of directors whose collective experience derives from January 2024 a variety of arts-related backgrounds, including business operations, financial management, university and adult education, art event programming, and volunteer management.

The Board of Directors has established three standing committees to oversee key aspects of its operations: Communications & Public Relations, Finance, Governance & Operations, Program & Event Planning.

Through its various subscription levels, community members, artists, creatives, and businesses can support GAN’s objects financially. Subscription fees are collected annually to help offset operational expenses. GAN receives income in the form of studio rentals fees, donations, sponsorships and has been successful in applying for local community grants. Attracting new sources of income is a key priority for the GAN Board in order to ensure ongoing sustainability and organizational and programming growth.

GAN is actively networking artists, creatives and the public to promote and foster shared experiences and the development of community connections.
